I was recently interviewed by the intimidatingly chic (that’s a good thing!) Bel Jacobs in London for her ‘What I Wear’ feature… I let slip that make up application is like the Hakka in my life, the Umbro skeleton in my closet and my admiration for Miss Piggy! x

What are you wearing?

Vintage Calvin Klein jumper, COS skirt, Joanne Hynes neckpiece and Topshop shoes.

Describe your style.

A bit contradictory: casual, mismatched, girl-meets-man. I love tailoring and strong lines mixed with statement accessories.

How has your style evolved?

I’m now more focused and value quality. I get blinded by sparkly things but I try to be less impulsive. If I’m still thinking about it a week later, it’s a must-buy.

Any style mistakes?

I was fond of an Umbro sports top in my teens that my mum had to pry from my fighting body. I was quite the tomboy.

How long does it take you to get ready?

If I’ve got five minutes, it takes five minutes – but give me two hours and I’ll fill that too. But I love the ritual of getting ready for a big night out. It’s like the female Hakka – it gets you in the zone. They don’t call it warpaint for nothing.

What inspires you style-wise?

It could be a trip to Francis Bacon’s studio or a movie I’ve watched, hanging out with my mates or visiting somewhere new.

Who inspired you?

My parents. They’ve got a fierce work ethic. My mum always said: ‘You get out of life what you put into it.’ If you’re not prepared to work your ass off, you’ll never realise your dreams. Miss Piggy is my idol. She isn’t afraid to go after what she wants.

Do your friends dress the same as you?

I’d be freaked out if there was some Single White Female action going on. There’s a bit of swapping and stealing but I do my thing and my friends do theirs.

What would you change about your look?

I wouldn’t say no to an extra couple of inches.

Is there anything you’d change about your life?

No. Everything happens for a reason and, even though I’m impatient at times, the pace is as it should be.

Where do you shop?

Independent boutiques with niche labels that can’t be found everywhere. I love Selfridges for the designer selection. Dover Street Market and Colette in Paris are treats I relish.

How do you shop?

I’m very decisive so there’s generally very little hanging about.

What is your favourite piece of clothing?

My Balenciaga leather motorcycle jacket and a floor-length blush-coloured feather skirt from Paris.

Favourite designers?

Miu Miu, Simone Rocha, Stella McCartney, Peter Pilotto, JW Anderson, Christopher Kane, Jil Sander, Clements Ribeiro. I could go on.

Is there anything you’d like to own but can’t afford?

I’ve got a designer bucket list: a Chanel bag; Elie Saab couture gown; Prada coat; Balenciaga lego shoes.

If you could be anything, what would that be?

I’m doing what I want to do but maybe a psychologist. I enjoy delving into people’s problems and helping if I can, although I wonder if I’d cope with the emotional overload. Still, I like the sound of Dr Angela Scanlon.

What skill would you like?

I’d like to play the flute.

Tell us something no one knows about you.

I enjoy a Saturday wearing dungarees doing a spot of DIY while listening to The Cure.
